Writing is a solitary practice. While writing exhibition copy, I just listened to a recording of Jerry Saltz in converstation with Radiovisual about how he spends 14 or 15 hours a day locked up in his office so that he can write. In this prison of your own thoughts, deleting or editing is inevitable, even if you think you’re David Foster Wallace. If only word length wasn’t a requirement for writing art reviews, then I could spend more time looking at art than writing about it. Some exhibition reviews simply require one sentence while others seem to require a torrent of words.
However, I do not want to throw everything away.
